Job Summary
Justice Defenders seeks two Legal Officers to remove legal, procedural and institutional barriers that cause prolonged detention for remand prisoners in Jinja and Kalangala prisons.
Key Duties
- Represent eligible inmates during trials, bail hearings and appeals.
- Coach inmates on self-representation, court procedure and cross-examination.
- Provide legal aid, file tracing, surety tracing and legal-document preparation.
- Train prison-based paralegal networks and coordinate with Police, Judiciary, Prisons and State Attorneys.
Qualifications
- LLB and Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from LDC.
- Enrolled Advocate of the High Court of Uganda with a current practising certificate.
- At least 2–3 years’ experience in criminal defence, legal aid or human-rights advocacy.
- English required; Lusoga and Luganda are desirable for Jinja, while Luganda is desirable for Kalangala.
